On 15 November 2022, within the framework of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the event “Sustainable Development Day” was held, organized by the State of Qatar.
The Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Water and Climate Coalition Leaders Mr. Sulton Rahimzoda attended this event as a speaker. In his speech, Sulton Rahimzoda presented information on the preparations for the UN 2023 Water Conference, which will be held in March, co-chaired by Tajikistan and the Netherlands, and explained how it could become a watershed moment in addressing global water issues.
After the session, a meeting was held between Mr. Sulton Rahimzoda and the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the State of Qatar, H.E. Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani.
During the meeting, Mr. Sulton Rahimzoda noted the importance of the UN 2023 Conference and particularly informed about the results of the recent preparatory meeting of the President of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, within which the 5 themes of the Interactive Dialogues of the Conference were finalized. He also clarified the opportunities provided for developed and developing countries to co-chair one of the interactive dialogues of the Conference. Mr. Sulton Rahimzoda as well noted the importance of the Water Action Agenda, of the Conference which is a set of voluntary commitments that stakeholders of different levels can join, from individuals to large companies, financial institutions, and UN member states.
H.E. Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani expressed the interest of the State of Qatar in the UN 2023 Water Conference. He noted that Qatar would participate at the appropriate level and would consider applying to co-chair one of the interactive dialogues of the Conference.
